Letting go is not a one-time event, it’s a continual process. We need to let go many times if we truly want to overcome our past and move forward with intention rather than reaction. This philosophy is at the core of why I teach yoga and how my personal practice has profoundly impacted my life over the past 30 years.
The Yoga Mat as a Safe Space
For me, my yoga mat is a sacred space that holds room for every version of myself - the strong, the tired, the heartbroken, the joyful, the confused, and the blissful. It’s a space where there’s no need for pretense. As long as I approach my practice without an egoic attachment to the physical postures, my truth and vulnerability emerge daily, providing an honest opportunity for self-discovery with each session.
The Process
Within my yoga practice, I find room for intention setting, breathwork, movement, balance, struggle, focus, acceptance, and joy. There are moments of triumph and moments of failure, times when tears flow freely and times when laughter fills the air. And at the end of each practice, there’s the surrender into Savasana, corpse pose, symbolizing the death of the version of myself who stepped onto the mat just moments ago.
It’s a blatant reminder of the art of letting go; of the continual need to Release, Renew, and Redefine.
We are the creators. We’re all in a matrix in which we get to choose every single second of. Each moment presents us with the opportunity to make conscious choices, let go of old beliefs and create the life we desire.
It's the continued act of shaping and reshaping our narratives, embracing expansion, and awakening to our fullest potential. What a liberating journey of empowerment!
It's this realization that brings immense peace and joy to so many. Oftentimes the work is found in getting out of our own way, holding ourselves accountable, and checking in on our limiting beliefs. Then we begin making clear, purposeful choices from a place of understanding and clarity to begin the creating portion.
Simply put:
We can’t create the new, when we’re still clinging to the old.
I encourage you to embrace the journey, whether it's on or off your yoga mat, maybe a little of both. It's a magnificent and transformative path that invites us to live with intention and purpose!
Just a note, this process is not about forgetting or ignoring the past; it's about acknowledging it, learning from it, and then bravely moving forward. And as we continually release and reshape ourselves, we reclaim our power and begin to own our stories.
